Answer engine optimization

one paragraph and three citations.

What answer engine optimization is, how an engine decides whose name goes in that paragraph, and the parts of it nobody can sell you.

The short answer

Answer engine optimization, in three sentences.

Definition Answer engine optimization is the work of being in the sources an AI engine retrieves when a buyer asks a question, and being described consistently enough across those sources that the engine is willing to name you in its answer.

It has two halves that people usually confuse. The first is access and accuracy: can the engine reach your pages, and do the records it already trusts agree with each other about what you are. The second is winnability: for a given question, is there room in a three-name answer at all. Most of the available gain in the first year is in the first half, which is unglamorous and rarely what a dashboard measures.

Terminology

AEO, GEO, LLMO, AI visibility.

Four names for one job. We use "answer engine optimization" because it says what the buyer is doing — asking a question and reading an answer — rather than what the vendor is doing.

AEO · answer engine optimization Being named and cited in the answer a buyer reads. The framing this site uses.
GEO · generative engine optimization The same work, named after the engine that generates the text. The term most common in search marketing.
LLMO · LLM optimization The same work, named after the model. Tends to be used by people focused on what is in the training data rather than what is retrieved.
AI visibility Usually the measurement only — a score for how often you are mentioned. A score is not the work, and most of them cannot be checked.
What we mean Correct the record engines read, publish pages worth citing, and prove the change with a control group.

Mechanism

How an engine decides whose name goes in.

Engines differ in the details and change without notice. The sequence below is the part that has held steady, and it is the part worth building against.

01 Retrieve

The question is turned into one or more searches, and a handful of documents come back. If your page is not reachable, or answers a different question than the one asked, the rest never happens.

02 Corroborate

A claim that appears in one place is a risk; a claim that appears the same way in three is safe to repeat. Engines behave as if they know this.

03 Resolve the entity

Two spellings of a product, an old company name, a mechanism described two ways: each one splits the evidence for you into two weaker piles.

04 Fit the sentence

The answer has room for three names. Being the fourth-best documented option is worth something on a results page and nothing here.

What actually moves it

In the order we would do them.

One description of you, everywhere

01
The work Pick one wording for what you do, one spelling of each product, one company name. Then push it through every record that disagrees — your own pages first, then registries, directories, profiles and old releases.
Why first It is the only item on this list that makes every later item work better, and the only one that costs nothing but attention.

Being in the records engines already trust

02
The work Industry registries, standards bodies, public databases, trade associations, reference sites. A correction in one of these outranks a page on your own domain, because corroboration is what the engine is looking for.
The catch Most of these take a human request and weeks of waiting. There is no API and no shortcut, which is exactly why competitors skip it.

Pages that answer the question asked

03
The work One page per real buyer question, answering it in the first paragraph, in sentences that still make sense when lifted out of the page. An engine quotes a sentence, not a section.
What fails Pages that bury the answer under positioning, and volume plays: fifty thin pages are read as one weak source, not fifty.

Machine-readable facts and crawler access

04
The work Structured data for the things you want quoted, a sitemap that is true, and a robots policy that does not quietly block the crawlers behind the engines you care about.
Worth checking today Blocking an AI crawler is the single most common unforced error we find, usually added years ago for a different reason. The publishers document their own crawler names: OpenAI and Google both publish theirs.

A measurement you can check

05
The work A fixed panel of buyer questions, run on a schedule against the engines your buyers use, with a fifth of the questions held back and worked on by nobody.
Why it belongs on this list Without a control group, every item above is a story. How the holdout is built, and what it cannot tell you →

Limits

What answer engine optimization cannot do.

Every one of these is sold by somebody. None of them is real.

Cannot

Make you the answer to a question you lose

If three competitors are further along on the thing being asked about, the honest move is to change the questions you compete on, not the sources.

Cannot

Edit a model's memory

What a model recalls without searching changes when it is retrained. You can influence what it reads next time; you cannot patch it now.

Cannot

Guarantee a position

The same question answers differently by session, account and region. Anyone promising a rank in an answer is selling a number they do not control.

And the methods we will not use at any price: hidden text, instructions written on a page to be read by a model rather than a person, cloaked pages served differently to crawlers, invented reviews, and content published under the name of someone who does not exist. These work briefly and are a liability permanently.

Questions

What people ask next.

Is answer engine optimization the same as generative engine optimization?

In practice yes. Answer engine optimization, generative engine optimization, LLM optimization and AI visibility all name the same work: being in the sources an engine retrieves, and being described consistently enough across them that it is willing to name you. The acronyms differ by who is selling them.

How long does it take to appear in an AI answer?

Engines that search the live web can pick up a corrected page within days of it being crawled. Engines answering from training weights only change when they are retrained, which is months and outside anyone's control. This is why a program should be judged on the retrieval-grounded engines first.

Can you pay to be named in an AI answer?

Not in the organic paragraph. Some engines sell ad placements beside or inside their answers, which are labelled and separate. Anyone offering paid inclusion in the organic answer itself is either describing an ad product or describing manipulation.

Does answer engine optimization require new pages?

Often the first gain is not a new page but a correction to an existing record: a registry entry, a stale description, a product name spelled two ways. New pages help when a buyer question has no good answer anywhere, including on your own site.
